Verano 19’ - RICKY RENUNCIA PROTESTS - SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO
In July 2019, Puerto Rico erupted. Following the leak of a private chat group in which Governor Ricardo Rosselló made racist, misogynistic, and politically corrupt statements, hundreds of thousands of Puerto Ricans took to the streets of San Juan in what became the largest protest in the island’s history. Eleven days later, Rosselló resigned — the first time a sitting governor of Puerto Rico had ever been forced out by the people.
Ricky Renuncia is a body of street photography made on the ground during Verano del ’19, documenting the protests along the streets of San Juan. These images capture the faces, signs, crowd energy, and collective will of a people in motion — shot from inside the movement, not outside it. The archive spans multiple days, crowd and individual, grief and joy, fury and celebration.
